Good Ideas - Liew Yen Thung
Based on the research paper prepared by Karin Jesuis, she stated that Steven Johnson had identified 7 ways of good ideas from which are adjacent possible, liquid networks, the slow hunch, serendipity, error, exaptation, and platforms. First, adjacent possible is the most foundational step to having a good idea. This is because an individual won’t suddenly pop out a genuine idea from its own. It must have the knowledge and the experience that it has been gone through to have a complete idea. Therefore, the base of where the good ideas from are adjacent possible.
Next, liquid networks and platforms are a part of the ways of good ideas from. These ways usually act as a conversation and interaction space for individuals to share their own thoughts and ideas. This might inspire individuals when they interact with each other. From those two points, it can connect with point 3 and 4 which are slow hunch and serendipity. Starting with the conversation had at the interaction space, individuals might have serendipity come out in their minds. Not only in interaction space, individuals also can have eureka minds or ideas when they are taking walks or reading outside the fields. From serendipity, a slow hunch will gradually appear in an individual’s mind. That’s where the ideas come from.
Apart from that, individuals also can get ideas from error and exaptation. This is because finding errors can help to improve skills and expand knowledge (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). Therefore, finding out the error can help to have an exaptation on the new fields. For example, Velcro tape was founded by a Swiss electrical engineer called George de Mestral. George discovered that the cocklebur is made up of hundreds of tiny hooks that stick firmly to clothing and fur while he is walking through the woods. He developed the first nylon hook and loop fasteners in 1951 (History of velcro companies - our timeline of innovation, 2024).
Besides the 7 ways of good ideas from, there is also a way to generate a good idea which is to interact with people from different fields. It might be a little confusing as some terminology that only be used by that specific field will pop out when interacting. Nevertheless, some good ideas might pop up when having conversations with others. For instance, my Traditional Chinese Medicine Physician suggested me that to propose an AI system that can identify the problems just by scanning the patients after hearing that I major in AI. It inspires me a lot as this field hasn’t been discovered much by using AI in recent industries.
