WICKED PROBLEMS - WEEK 8

PROBLEM DEFINITION

LIEW YEN THUNG (TP070659)

Due to the transformation in the transportation field, the way of going out become more and more such as driving cars, taking public transportation, walking, and more. However, there is a wicked problem happening around the world that makes everyone annoyed. The problem is the inefficient and unclean public transportation (Owens, 2019). This can be said that the public still strongly relies on cars when going out although there already is public transportation provided. Besides, it also means that pollution gradually increases due to the exhaust gas from cars.

According to Owens (2019), Owens and her team conducted a user survey and interviews to

address this issue. They found out that there are some similar pain points among the users’ responses. The pain points are people prefer cars even though they are more costly, public transportation is unreliable and not convenient, and bike-sharing systems are not popular introduced in every country. Thus, it is a common problem that exists around the world followed by the same traffic issues.

LEE YANG QING (TP071206)

Besides, environmental pollution is also a significant pain point that is directly linked to traffic congestion in cities. Traffic congestion always increases air pollution and noise pollution when the cars are stuck in traffic, they need to spend more time idling, crawling, and stopping and going, which increases emissions of vehicle exhausts, non-combustion emissions, and so on . This stop-and-go nature of congested traffic leads to inefficient combustion processes and results in greater emissions per mile travelled. Furthermore, the longer travel time of the vehicles stuck in traffic leads to an increase in overall fuel consumption and emissions of toxic gases. These kinds of emissions will definitely concentrate in densely populated cities and lead residents to exposure to high levels of air pollutants that can be hazardous to health, especially for the respiratory system (Zhang & Batterman, 2019).

In a nutshell, addressing these pain points require a multifaceted approach such as implementing effective traffic management, implementing vehicle emission controls, vehicle restriction policies, and so on (Sharmilaa & Ilango, 2022). By doing this, cities can mitigate the negative impacts of traffic congestion and environmental pollution.

USER PERSONA

ANAN USAMA HASSAN AHMED ELSAYED (TP076383)

Traffic congestion is a classic example of a wicked problem that plagues modern cities. Wicked problems are difficult to solve because they are interconnected to other issues and have no single, definitive solution. Traffic congestion can be caused by several factors, including population growth, poor infrastructure, and an increase in car ownership. It can lead to many negative consequences, such as air pollution, wasted time, and increased stress levels.

According to the image in the user persona/user journey section (Owens, 2019), it depicts a user persona, Bob Smith, who is frustrated by traffic congestion. The text describes Bob’s journey as he tries to go surfing. He gets up and arrives at the beach early in order to find parking, but he pays too much for the parking fee. After he finishes, he’s faced with rush hour traffic in the city. This highlights the time wasted and inconvenience caused by traffic congestion.

There are a number of potential solutions to traffic congestion, such as improving public transportation, investing in carpooling and ride-sharing programs, and encouraging people to walk or bike. However, none of these solutions are easy to implement, and they all have their own challenges. Traffic congestion is a complex problem that will require a multifaceted approach to solve.

STORYBOARD

WENDY KOH XIN HUI (TP077721)

In Malaysia, transport plays a crucial role in the development of vibrant urban centers as it manages to ensure connectivity and accessibility across the nation and allows the easy flow of people.

At the rapid pace of development of Malaysia’s economy, a substantial portion of the populace owns private vehicles which allows them to access jobs and shops easily. In the city, the city streets are packed with a lot of traffic, especially in the morning on busy working days. Urban traffic congestion occurs as people rush to get to their workplaces and schools. The drivers are stuck in the long lines of traffic which causes them to become impatient and start honking horns. The inefficiency of traffic congestion makes them feel stressed and they might be late as their transports inch forward slowly in rush hour. The real-time traffic data and incidents play a vital role as it will showcase the traffic flows. All the traffic data will be updated from the traffic management center to the commuters to allow them to use the information to avoid the worst of congestion. The commuters will make informed decisions based on the notifications about traffic delays to avoid and reduce traffic congestion to allow them to get to their destinations safely. After following the real-time suggestion routes, the traffic congestion problems are solved and the traffic flow becomes smoother and less congested. The implementation of real-time road conditions also provides a more pleasant urban mobility experience for commutes.

SOLUTION

PUTERI HANNAH BINTI MOHAMED DAUD IBRAHIM (TP077710)

A wicked problem can be referred to as a social or cultural problem that is difficult to solve because of its interconnectedness to nature. People that live in cities do face wicked problems and one of them is the congestion of public transport in the city. One of the main reasons for traffic congestion are road works, accidents and traffic overload on the same road (Petit, 2021).

The solution for this problem can be seen by improving public transportation service in our country. To get more people to use public transport, discounted prices of these transports can be given and also increasing the availability time of transport is good so that it can fit to the schedule of more people. Public transportation runs on an efficient system where it is optimised to transport as many people as possible in a single time. Rather than just one or two people occupying a car to reach their destinations, a public transportation vehicle can carry dozens of people at once. Public transportation also works as an alternative for driving where one can also avoid dealing with stress, delays and high fuel costs (Energy Savings Lab, 2023).

To conclude, we can say that wicked problems are faced by everyone whether it is directly or indirectly. The issues of wicked problems normally have a far-reaching impact that can affect a community, region or society.
